Introduction
With the many recent recalls of toys, including those of well known toy manufacturers, it is especially important to choose toys that are age appropriate and safe. Dangerous designs, toys containing illegal levels of lead, toys that are inappropriate for the age of the child and toys that have strong magnets that can be deadly if swallowed are examples of toys that should be avoided.
Steps
Step One
Select toys that are appropriate for the child's age and/or skill level. If you are not sure, ask a salesperson for suggestions of age appropriate toys.
Step Two
Read the labels. Check for age appropriateness (if applicable) and safety recommendations. Do not assume that a bright child can safely handle a toy designed for a much older child.
Step Three
If you buy a riding toy such as a bicycle, skateboard, roller blades or skates, be sure to purchase a helmet as well. Be sure the helmet fits the child properly before allowing the child to use a riding toy.
Step Four
For young children who put things in their mouths, avoid marbles or games with small balls that pose a choking hazard.
Step Five
Look for well made toys. Avoid toys made of brittle plastic that can break and leave hazardous points or edges.
Step Six
Carefully consider the purchase of toys with projectiles such as rockets or darts. Improper use can cause serious eye injury.
Step Seven
Magnets, when swallowed, can cause serious internal injuries and may require surgery to remove. Children under the age of 6 should not play with magnetic toys that have small parts.
